Ascot formal wear
Once upon a time, a divorcee, a bare-legged lady or a gentleman without a hat - or even the wrong coloured hat
- could cause consternation by merely turning up at Royal Ascot.
Today the strict rules of Ascot formal wear have been relaxed
- yet listen in to a fashion commentator scanning the form on race day, and you could be excused for thinking
the 21st Century is still a good few decades off.
The strict rules of dress etiquette apply to the Royal enclosures and most of the boxes and private areas. Please ensure
that you are aware of the rules that will be adhered to.
Formal menswear at Royal Ascot
Men are required to wear morning suit, national dress or uniform - brown shoes are banned and top hats are the
order of the day for Ascot formal wear.
Crowns must be covered in the Royal Enclosure.
Morning Wear
This is the dress code for church weddings, The Royal Enclosure at Ascot, Royal garden parties, Investitures,
trooping of the colour, formal Royal events, some memorial services and funerals.
The traditional morning suit consists of a black tailcoat worn with dove grey or buff waistcoat and charcoal striped
trousers, or a grey tailcoat, matching grey waistcoat and trousers. For both outfits a plain white shirt and grey
patterned tie are appropriate. Note that the bottom button of the waistcoat should never be fastened.
A less formal version is a black formal lounge jacket worn with striped trousers and accessories as above. It is
also sometimes acceptable to wear a plain dark lounge suit. Black lace up shoes, worn with matching silk or cotton
black socks should always be worn with morning dress.
Another description of the formal morning suit used as Ascot formal wear
Black morning tail jacket, Black/grey striped morning trousers, grey waistcoat.
Alternative Option -
Plain or fancy coloured waistcoat of your choice.
Shirt with classic collar and grey tie (as illustrated above),
shirt with deep wing collar, cravat and pin to match or compliment waistcoat, top pocket handkerchief, watch and chain.
Grey or black top hat. Black oxford lace shoes.

Ladies Ascot formal wear
Ladies must wear a hat that covers their crown and formal day wear.
Trousers are only tolerated if part of a suit and dresses and skirts must be no more than two inches above the knee.
Bare legs are frowned upon although the late Princess of Wales once got away with going bare-legged into the Royal
Enclosure, but anyone else would be expected to be turned out in stockings or tights.
Some finer points of Ascot formal wear etiquette, recommend that
women cover their shoulders and wear sensible shoes that match the outfit - walking on grass in stilettos is no
easy task.
