Ascot Raceway, Ascot, Berkshire, England
The Ascot racecourse is owned by the Crown estates, located in the village of Ascot in the English county of
Berkshire and is
used for thoroughbred horse racing. It is closely associated with the British Royal family and is one of the
leading racecourses in the United Kingdom, hosting 9 of the UK's 31 annual Group 1 races. The site belongs to the
Crown Estate.
It forms part of the Windsor Estate with approximately 6,300 hectares (15,600 acres) and includes The Great
Park, the private Home Park, forests, residential and commercial properties including Berkshire and Swinley Forest
Golf Courses, Ascot Racecourse, the Savill and Valley Gardens, Smith's Lawn and let farms. It is currently valued
at £154 million, representing 3.2% of the total property value of The Crown Estate.
The Crown Estate has other traditional holdings in the UK, a legacy of the Sovereign's historic duty to defend
the realm. Castles at Dover, Chester and Scarborough are leased to English Heritage and enjoyed by the nation.
Ascot Raceway redevelopments
In June 2002, plans for the £180 million (2002 prices) redevelopment of Ascot Racecourse, the most extensive project
of its type ever seen in Europe, were unveiled. Two new underpasses have been built, the racecourse re-furbished and a
the new stand has been erected.
It's distinctive design is defined by the spectacular parasol roof suspended on "structural trees". The stand is
flooded with natural light, using glass and aluminium materials, bringing the outside in as you walk through the
impressive galleries.
The development of the Ascot Raceway track is the result of considerable research and application over the last five
years. The new straight mile surface, the eradication of the major crossings and integration of a new state of
the art irrigation system throughout are huge advances for Ascot.
Ascot Racecourse will be running tours of the redevelopment to ticket holders once the racecourse is open to the public.
The tours will be free and will operate on race days (excluding Ascot Raceway). Tours will begin at midday from the
Parade Ring and will be run on a "first come first served" basis. The hour-long tour will cover a tour of the site,
a brief history of the course and information on the redevelopment process.
