The Royal Ascot tie
Introduction
An ascot tie, or ascot, is traditionally a narrow neckband with wide pointed wings, made of pale grey patterned silk.
It is simply a man's broad silk necktie. This wide, formal tie is usually patterned, folded over and fastened with
a stickpin or tie tack. It is usually
reserved for ultra-formal daytime weddings and special occasions like Royal Ascot and is worn with a cutaway coat
and striped grey trousers.
Ascot Ties for Men are descended from the cravat. It became a separate entity sometime in the 1880s, when upper-middle-class
European men began to wear it on formal morning (i.e. daytime) occasions. One of these events, the Royal Ascot race
meeting at the Ascot Racecourse, gave the ascot its name. The ascot was also commonly worn for business in the late
19th and early 20th centuries. In the United States, "ascot" is another name for a cravat.
A cravat is the neckband that was the forerunner of the modern tailored necktie. The modern form of the cravat
originated in the 1630s.
